“L.A. Times: Sweet Lady Jane Bakery Shuts Its Doors Across the City”

Say Goodbye to the Iconic Triple Berry Cake from Sweet Lady Jane

For more than three decades, Sweet Lady Jane’s Triple Berry Cake has been a must-have at special occasions. As of December 31, 2023, all six of its Los Angeles locations have officially closed their doors to the public. So, say goodbye to the now iconic cake that’s been captivating special events since 1988.

The Sweet Lady Jane Story

Founder Jane Lockhart opened the first Sweet Lady Jane bakery on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood in 1988, and it didn’t take long for their Triple Berry Cake to become an instant hit. While the company was celebrating their 35th anniversary in June of this year, they unfortunately couldn’t make it until the summer of 2024.

By the time it closed its doors, the Triple Berry Cake had become an essential item of any celebration, accounting for more than half of the bakery’s sales. It’s simple yet delightful design of yellow butter cake, whipped cream, and fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries made a lasting impression on all who tasted it.

The Pricey Best-seller

Though the cake balanced sweetness and flavor perfectly, the price tag may have been a deterrent for some bakers. The 9-inch cake cost a hefty $100 when it closed its doors, making way for other competitors to offer more affordable options.

Competitors Move In

Despite Sweet Lady Jane’s closure, bakeries such as Erin McKenna’s Bakery, Whole Foods, Valerie Confections, and Quarter Sheets have stepped up to provide alternatives. Many of them have their own signature recipes, such as the Berry Chantilly Cake from Whole Foods, Blum’s Coffee Crunch Cake from Valerie Confections, and the cakes from Hannah Ziskin at Quarter Sheets.

What’s Next for Los Angeles?

With the end of an era also come the opportunities of the future. Chocolate with salted caramel cake from République may be next in line to take over as LA’s most desired dessert. Only time will tell who will come on top as the next “it” cake in Los Angeles.
